Digs for foundations and strip footings

Digging along the lines in the plans for strip footings, footings and slab foundations. Precision here pays off later — every extra centimeter of depth is extra concrete.

Machine

mini excavator or backhoe loader

Typical depth

60–120 cm

Typical time

one to two days

How it's done

The lines are marked from the drawing before we start. We dig with a bucket the width of the footing, so there's no extra digging to the sides. The last few centimeters at the bottom are cleaned by hand — an excavator bucket on the bottom of a footing is a common cause of settling years later.

When we say no

We don't start without setting out and without a zero elevation. If you don't have plans, we can dig to your stakes, but responsibility for the dimensions stays with you and that's put in writing beforehand.

What to know afterward

A foundation trench shouldn't stay open long. In rain the walls cave in and the bottom softens. Plan the concrete pour within two or three days of the dig.
