Trenches for water, sewer and cable

Narrow trenches for water lines, sewer, power cable and internet, plus digs for water meter pits.

Machine

mini excavator, 30 or 50 cm bucket

Typical depth

60–150 cm

Typical time

half a day to one day

How it's done

We walk the route before digging — looking for manholes, old pipes and signs of earlier digs. Sewer lines need a fall, so the depth at each end is different and gets measured, not eyeballed. Backfill goes in layers with compaction, so the trench doesn't sink a month later.

When we say no

If nobody knows where an existing cable runs, the first meters are dug by hand. We don't drive a machine blindly across a yard with unknown utilities.

What to know afterward

Before backfilling, photograph the open trench with a tape measure in the shot. Five years later that photo is worth more than any memory.

The mini excavator is 98 cm wide. Measure the entrance at its narrowest point — between the posts, not between the gate leaves.
