Digs for fences and retaining walls

Trench digging along a line for a fence, retaining wall or gabion foundation, including holes for individual posts.

Machine

mini excavator, 30 or 40 cm bucket

Typical depth

50–100 cm

Typical time

half a day to one day

How it's done

The line is strung along the property boundary. The depth depends on the height of the fence and whether it will also retain soil. A retaining wall also needs drainage behind it, or the first wet winter pushes it over.

When we say no

We don't dig along a boundary that neighbors are disputing until it's settled where it runs.

What to know afterward

A fence right on the boundary affects your neighbor. Agree on the line before the dig, not after the concrete.

Also known as

fence trench, fence foundation, post holes, retaining wall, gabions, gate foundations

Will the machine fit?

98 cm · mini excavator

The mini excavator is 98 cm wide. Measure the entrance at its narrowest point — between the posts, not between the gate leaves.
