Base prep for stone paths and paving

Excavation, a compacted crushed-stone base and a sand bed — a ready base for stone paths, walkways, parking spots and patios. You or your own mason lay the paving on top.

Machine

mini excavator, plate compactor

Typical depth

20–35 cm

Typical time

one to two days

How it's done

The depth depends on what will go over it — people or cars. We build in a fall for runoff, usually one to two percent away from the building. The base is compacted in layers, because an uncompacted base settles after the first winter and the slabs start to shift.

When we say no

We don't build a base on freshly filled ground that hasn't settled.

What to know afterward

Let the base take one rain before laying. That shows whether the fall works.

The mini excavator is 98 cm wide. Measure the entrance at its narrowest point — between the posts, not between the gate leaves.
